A HOMILY FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER –  CYCLE “B” –  4/26/15  – SMG

+ Pax et Bonum!  Peace and Goodness to you this day!

Today, we certainly have been conditioned to know that there are things in this life that can help us, and that there are things in this life that can hurt us.  Something things help us live longer.  And some things are probably killing us.  For example, we know that green, leafy vegetable are good for our bodies.  Or at least that is what they tell us.  It may just be the only way that they can sell broccoli.  Question:  Why would God make green, leafy vegetables, like broccoli, smell like it does when you cook it?  If God wants us to eat broccoli, then why not make it smell like chocolate cake when you’re cooking it?  Believe me, it’s on my list of questions for God.  Trans fats are definitely bad.  Shouldn’t eat trans fats.  And trans fats are created when you fry something.  That makes going to the State Fair one of the most unhealthy, most dangerous things that you can do!  Forget about the stage collapsing at the State Fair, it’s the fried food that will kill you.  We’re kinda getting a reputation for stage collapsings, aren’t we?  Of course, smoking is bad for you.  Everybody knows that now.  Apparently sucking in smoke from rolled up, dried weeds wrapped in paper, wasn’t such a good idea.  Who came up with that, anyways?  Running is good for you.  And that new Matcha stuff is good for you.  Have you seen this, or heard about this?  It is like green tea expresso.  It’s this thick, green stuff you drink.  They say it tastes like grass.  My question is, how do they know that?

Just as it is true that some things are good for us, and some things are bad for us.  What is also true is that some people are good for us.  And some people are not so good for us.   Other people can have a great amount of influence over us.  And who we let influence us, who we let guide and direct our lives, well that’s who’s shepherding us today.  And Jesus is reminding us today, on this Fourth Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday, that He wants to be our guide and director through this life.  He wants to be our Good Shepherd.  There are many people today vying to be our shepherds.  There are so many people who want to try and tell us how to live our lives today.  The people that we read what they write.  The people that we listen to their music.  The people that we watch at the movies and on TV.  The people that we follow online and be-friend on social media.  Our boss.  Our doctor.  Our financial advisor.  Our barber. Our spouse.  Our mother-in-law.  The Vicar General of the Diocese.  Dr. Phil.  Donald Trump.  Kim Kardashian.  So many!!!  And every day, just like we decide what to eat, and what to drink, and what to do to keep our bodies strong, we also have to decide to follow and listen to!  Who’s your shepherd?  And just how good are they?

Maybe the real question to ask today, is where is YOUR shepherd, or shepherds, leading you?  Are they leading to Heaven, to ever-lasting life?  Or are they leading you some place else?  And if they are leading you any place other than Heaven, do you really want to follow them?  Riches, and fame, and popularity, and power, and beautiful skin, are all nice, but none of them will matter at all, if you’re dead and in Hell!

There is One way to Heaven.  And there is only One Shepherd that is going to get us there.  And it is NOT Kim Kardashian!  No.  It’s Jesus Christ.  He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  He is the Cornerstone that was rejected by the builders, but Who now needs to be the center of our life.  Let us follow Him.  Let us follow Him today and every day for the rest of our lives!

We worry about trans fats, and cancer, and body mass indexes.  We eat and drink things like that Matcha, and broccoli, and purified water.  And we do all of those things to live a little longer.  What are we doing to live forever?  Are we following the Commandments?  Are we praying?  Are we serving and helping out and getting our hands dirty for the Kingdom?  And why not follow a Good Shepherd who wants us to live forever, instead of a Bad Shepherd that just wants to make some money off of us?   Choose Christ!

+ May God bless us on this Good Shepherd Sunday,  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…         AMEN !!!

St. Maria Goretti…          Pray for us !!!
