A HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF THE EPHIPANY  –  CYCLE “C”  – 1/6/19  –  SMG

+  Pax et Bonum!   Peace and Goodness to you this day!

One of the greatest technological inventions of the last twenty years has got to be our GPS systems, and digital maps, that we now have on our phones and in our cars.  Most especially for priests, the Garmin, and then GPS, and Onstar, and all the different digital directions apps, have truly been life-changing.  All of us sudden, finding a house in the middle of the middle of the night for the anointing of the sick, or finding a wedding rehearsal dinner, or even finding a funeral , has become a whole lot easier.  It is amazing you know, you can punch in an address here in Westfield, Indiana, and the car’s electronics will give you turn by turn directions for hours, until you pull right into the place where you want to be.  Then, of course, there’s those most famous words of all, when you aren’t listening, or when you do make a wrong turn, “recalculating”.  The car’s smart enough not to tell you, “You idiot, why didn’t you listen to me and follow my directions.”  Instead, it just says “recalculating”.  Which is essentially, you messed up.  It wasn’t me.  But I’m so smart that I’m going to fix your mess and get you back on track.  GPS is wonderful.

God, of course, came up with the original brand of this, two-thousand years ago, when He used a star to direct the Three Kings.   So before there was Onstar, there was God’s Star.  And all the Three Kings had to do, was to keep following the star.  I don’t know if the star had a “recalculating” feature or not.  But as we celebrate on this Feast of the Epiphany, God got those Three Kings, from three different countries, to exactly the right manger outside of Bethlehem!  And there was no smart phone involved, or Garmin, or any other kind of GPS system.   There was just a star, and a lot of Faith and trust, and a promise that God was going to take the Three Kings some place very special, and that they would see something that they would never forget.

You know, as we pass through this life, it’s real easy for all of us to get lost, to get off track.  How many times and in how many situations, do you wish that you could hit a button, or punch in a code, and immediately get a “recalculating” plan, to save yourself a lot of problems?

Well you know, the Three Kings aren’t the only one to be guided by God.  God’s guidance in all of our lives, is exactly why He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to this world.  Jesus is the star, the light, that we need, to get on track, and stay on track, every day, to where God is trying to lead us.  And where is that?  It’s Heaven.  But we do get lost.  We do make wrong turns.  We do take wrong roads.  And it’s always Jesus calling us back.  Through His teachings, through Sacred Scripture, and through His Church, there is God calling all of us to stay on the right path to eternal life, and trying desperately to help us to reach our destinations in peace and safety.

The biggest problem is that so many times we don’t want to be guided, by a star, by God, by a light, or even by GPS.  We even say it, “We want to go our own way.”  And it doesn’t work.   And we get in trouble.  And we get lost.  When all it takes is a little bit of humility, to listen to God’s guidance, and let Him lead us!

Can you imagine how long it would have taken the Three Kings to find Baby Jesus if they were doing it on their own, no star?  We might still not be celebrating this Feast day, even in 2019!

My brothers and sisters, let us listen to God!  Let us accept His guidance and His help!  Let us let Him lead us.  He won’t steer us wrong.  And in the end, He will get us exactly where we are going to want to be!  God has given the perfect directions.  Like the Three Kings, let us follow His lead in this New Year!  And nobody knows how to “recalculate” better than God.

+ May Jesus continue to be revealed in our lives and in our world,  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…                         AMEN !!!

St. Maria Goretti…                       Pray for us !!!
