A HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF THE HOLY TRINITY – MAY 27TH, 2018 – SMG
+ Pax et Bonum! Peace and goodness to you this day!
We all like to think of ourselves united together in happiness and peace. We like to imagine ourselves getting along with everybody, and all of us working together in a bond of charity. Why can’t we all sit around the campfire and sing “Kumbaya”, and eat S’mores? And yet, we know that unity and peace are a lot more difficult than that. We don’t always all agree. The differences between men and women, the educated and the uneducated, the rich and the poor, Republicans and Democrats, the different races and ethnic backgrounds, dog people and cat people, android people vs. Apple people, left-handed people vs. right-handed people, these are all real differences. These differences, and many more, divide us and make real unity and real community extremely difficult in 2018. One wonders, why does it have to be so hard for us all to get along? Why can’t it be like in the Coca-Cola commercials? For generations now, the Coke commercials always show people getting along and being happy together. Whether they’re sitting on a beach drinking a Coke, or at a baseball game, or a huge family gathered around a holiday table drinking Coke, they’re always all together, and united, and happy. So we want peace with North Korea, maybe we should send them a case of Coke! And we want better relations between the police and our African American youth in our cities, wouldn’t it be nice if it were just as simple, as giving everybody a two-liter bottle of their favorite Coke brand? And what about school shootings? That’s on everybody’s mind this weekend, what if, instead of spraying classrooms with bullets, we gave every potential school shooter, every angry teenager, a can of Coke, so that they could shake up it up, and then spray the kids that they don’t like with the carbonated fizz! Even sticky Coke cleans up a lot easier than blood. So maybe that why the people in the Coke commercials all look so happy and together.
The truth is, that, while the commercials may look great, we know that those people in the Coke ads are just actors pretending to be happy and united together. Coke would like us to believe that their product will do that for us. But the reality is, that it will not. So what does united us together, what does breakdown divisions and lead us to peace and happiness, what is it that can bring us together, even in 2018? The answer, my brothers and sisters, is God. And the great Feast of the Unity of God, and that God offers to all of us, is today’s Feast of the Holy Trinity! You want unity, and peace, and happiness? Then you came to Mass on the right day today! For you see, today isn’t just about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today is also about the fact that you and I, and all of us, are invited today and every day, INTO that unity, into that relationship, and into that love and peace!
The Holy Trinity is ALL about relationship, unity, and love. Indeed, it is the unceasing love of the Father and the Son that generates the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit for al eternity. We got a glimpse of that, last weekend, on the Feast of Pentecost. The Holy Trinity then is the model for us, the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ! St. Paul tells us today that since we refer to God as Abba, then we are ALL His sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, in Christ. If we are truly seeking relationship, and unity, and love in the Church, then what we are truly seeking is the path that will lead all of us home to God’s Kingdom, where we will be united with Him forever! The way to unity, the way to holiness, the way to happiness, the way to the love and belonging that we most long for, in the deepest parts of our hearts, is not Coke. It’s not Pepsi, or Snapple, or Bud Light, or Jack Daniels either! The Triune God, our God, is the answer to our divisions, our isolation, and our lack of love in our lives. They should make a commercial about that!
Make no mistake about it! The love of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that we celebrate today, and that we are invited to share in their relationship together, is exactly the kind of love, and unity, and peace, that we need to bring our world together today. Even with all our problems and challenges, God wants to give us His unity and peace. God has a better way, and it has nothing to do with a soft drink. It has everything to do with love, and mercy, and healing, and forgiveness. We’ve got to get this right. We have so little time, and so much work to do!
Let us be examples of that love, and mercy, and forgiveness! God’s unity can conquer any and all of our divisions and problems. We just have to trust in our Triune God and in His ways. The Holy Trinity is for all of us. You don’t have to have a masters in theology, to realize that God is offering us, something very special here. Let us accept His invitation. Let us answer His call to work together.
+ May God bless all of us on this Feast Day, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit… AMEN !!!
St. Maria Goretti… Pray for us !!!
